Can I get an appointment for today?

While we occasionally have openings due to a patient rescheduling, our doctors’ appointment schedules are generally filled 1 to 3 weeks in advance. If you are in need of a same-day appointment, please contact our receptionist at 573-446-1600 to see if our doctors have an open slot available. We can also place your name on our special list of patients to notify in the event that another patient reschedules.

Why is the contact lens evaluation fee separate from the comprehensive eye exam fee?

Comprehensive eye exams include tests that determine general eye health and refractive status (i.e. eyeglass needs). Contact lenses are medical devices that may have certain health implications if not prescribed correctly. Your Doctor must invest additional time and expertise to determine which contact lenses are in a patient’s best vision and health interest and, as you might imagine, there are additional fees for this service.

Note: Sometimes this requires additional follow-up visits as well.

Why do I need to be evaluated every year for my contact lenses?

Contact lenses come in “contact” with the delicate surface of your eye and, over time, can change the status of the health of your eye. Contact lenses are also considered “Medical Devices” as they are directly placed on your eye; this means an evaluation needs to be done every year even if the prescription does not change. Most health conditions that contact lenses can be responsible for causing don’t result in obvious symptoms like pain or vision change – only your doctor can determine if contact lens wear continues to be safe with your most recent prescription. Most experienced doctors agree that one year is a suitable amount of time between checkups to ensure your eye health, given you are relatively symptom-free.

Isn’t it cheaper to buy my contacts online?

Can I get a copy of my eyeglass prescription and take it to be filled elsewhere?

Absolutely. After receiving an eye exam you are entitled to your eyeglass prescription for a period of 2 years and we are happy to provide it. We respect your desire to shop and put up no barriers to you receiving your prescription. We do, however, provide some warnings for those shopping around. We regularly find ourselves consulting on poorly made and poorly fitted glasses, as well as poorly recommended lens options that don’t meet the patient’s specific work needs.

First, as in any market, you can find products and services at a range of prices, and – as you might imagine – you tend to get what you pay for. However, when it comes to precision medical devices like eyeglasses, performance is directly related to three things:

  1. Optics
  2. Measuring and fitting experience of the Optician and
  3. Lens choice (i.e. customization for your specific needs).

Your glasses will work best if they are made correctly, which requires customization, and being made from materials that don’t impede the transmission of light from the objects you choose to focus upon. Lenses with suitable optics are not the least expensive lenses around, and exceptional opticians can be hard to find. Sometimes there are unexpected costs when purchasing cheap (often inferior) optical products, such as poorly made lenses, poorly fit frames and poor lens choices that don’t necessarily match your specific needs. This can result in your need to return (repeatedly) to the merchant and lead to a great deal of avoidable frustration.

My vision seems fine. Do I need an eye exam?

We, and the American Optometric Association, strongly recommend yearly comprehensive eye exams even if you have no noticeable visual disturbances, irritations, discomforts, strains, or concerns. One of the most valuable aspects of our routine eye exams is that they can help to prevent and detect eye diseases, problems, and conditions before they become more serious and disabling. Many eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, can come about without any early-on, noticeable symptoms. The sooner we can help you catch any eye issues, the better the outcome and the more plentiful the treatment options available.

How often do I need an eye exam?

That depends on your age! We start seeing children as young as 6 months old up to seniors. We recommend the following (but come in immediately for any on-going pains, irritations, visual changes, floaters, or eye injuries):
Children: We, along with the American Optometric Association, recommend children have their first eye exam between 6 months and 1 year old, again at 3 years old, and again, yearly, from then on

We take a variety of insurance plans and also accept self-paying customers without insurance.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve that causes blindness specifically to peripheral vision. Glaucoma is best treated and managed with early detection as it often occurs subtly over time causing most patients to not notice until ending stages of the disease. These subtle changes are additive over time and the cumulative effects can be devastating– it’s best for us to help you catch it before it becomes an issue.

What is macular degeneration?

Macular Degeneration is the number one cause of blindness in the United States, and like other diseases and conditions, is best treated with early detection. Our retinas are responsible for collecting and “recording” the images we see. The central part of the retina, called the macula, focuses our eyesight and provides clear, focused vision. This allows us to use our eyes for skills such as reading, driving, detecting colors, and even recognizing faces. When Macular Degeneration occurs, the macula begins to deteriorate causing vision loss and extreme difficulty doing these basic day-to-day tasks.

What’s the difference between our glasses and online glasses?

Quality, accurate, fit, safety, and comfort– these are all a gamble when you purchase online. At Family Focus Eyecare we don’t gamble with your vision. Glasses from online retailers are often made cheaply (both the lens and frames). The American Optometric Association recently did a study and determined that 44.8% of glasses purchased online failed to comply with prescription or impact resistance guidelines. Scarier yet, an alarming 29% of children’s glasses purchased in this study failed impact testing– meaning nearly 1 out of 3 glasses ordered online for children will improperly shatter on impact (whether from a child falling or an object such as a ball hitting their face). With such a high rate of incorrect lens prescriptions, iffy return policies, often-unknown fit before purchase, pupillary distance problems, and more, ordering online opens you up for headaches, improper vision correction, ill-fitting/uncomfortable frames, and, worst of all, potential of shattering while wearing due to failed impact resistance. Saving a little money by purchasing frames and lenses online will, literally, likely cause you headache and pain down the road.

When should I schedule my child’s eye exam?

Your child’s first exam can be scheduled at 6 months old! If you’ve missed that mark, bring you child in. Exams at age 3, and also just before starting kindergarten and first grade are recommended. You can read more about children and eyecare here.

My child doesn’t want to wear his/her glasses does it matter?

Yes! It is crucial that your child wear his/her glasses with correctly prescribed lenses. In order for a child to learn successfully they need proper vision. Whether it’s reading up close or far away on a white board, your child having proper vision is essential to his/her ability to learn. Vision also affects your child’s ability to focus, peripheral awareness, and hand/eye coordination. Also, depending on your child’s eye condition, not wearing prescribed glasses can cause “lazy eye” which can be harder to correct than it is to prevent.
